Affordable Italian cuisine in a casual downtown eatery. For a satisfying Italian dinner that's easy on the wallet, Mr. Z's Cucina Italiana can't be beat! They offer all of the traditional favorites, like antipasto, pastas and panini sandwiches. If spaghetti is not your pasta of choice, the staff at Mr. Z's will happily allow you to substitute a different variety. The Scene It's a small, modern bistro with an open kitchen along the back wall. Shelves with canned goods and other ingredients give the place a homey feel. Tables with umbrellas are outside for summertime sidewalk dining. Piped-in jazz music adds to the atmosphere. According to Mr. Z, the owner of Mr. Z's, what sets the restaurant apart is that if you traveled to Italy and went to ten different restaurants, you'd find between six and eight items on the menu at Mr. Z's. With 29 pasta dishes available, it's easy to see why the focus remains on classic Italian. The pumpkin ravioli, veal marsala, and Lasagna Vedura (all vegetable) are just a few of the appetizing choices. Mr. Z's tiramisu is some of the best in the city, as is the Vegetable Z sandwich and polenta. During your meal, don't be surprised if Mr. Z visits the table to make sure everything is to your liking. Mr. Z's features 3 dishes as specials from different regions of Italy daily.   The Food Reasonably priced Italian dishes with simple sauces and flavors. There are several salads and appetizers to start. The antipasto misti--olives, mozzarella cheese, artichoke hearts, roasted peppers and prosciutto -- is a good choice if you have a group of more than two people. If you don't feel like slurping on spaghetti, you can substitute any style pasta in any dish. Sandwiches and a daily selection of soups round out the menu. Patio Dining In Rome pasta tastes the same as at Mr. Z's... the patio is akin to Italy's outdoor dining without the airfare. So! Share an open umbrella, take a break, dine in the open. Come enjoy the robust flavors of years of Italian history, right in the heart of downtown Salt Lake City. Mr. Z's patio is within two blocks of the Capital Theater, the Promised Valley Playhouse, The Salt Palace Convention Center, Gallivan Center and next door to the Broadway Centre Movie Complex and parking garage. Recent Comments... I really enjoyed Mr Z's. The owner was our server and was very prompt and friendly. I had the clam chowder which I must admit is better than what I make. The bread was delicious! I will definitely go back for the atmosphere and authentic food. It's definitely no Olive Garden - which automatically makes it great in my book. I definitely recommend it.
